PIKO 53242 - Modernization car 2nd class B4ge DR III with apron
In 1960, the then DR began modernizing old express train cars from the pre-war period in order to meet the increased demands of travelers. New car bodies were built on the intact frames of old express train cars. The superstructures were modern welded constructions and the transitions already had rubber beads. The cars were immediately used in urban express transport and interzone transport in the Federal Republic of Germany. The existing apron, which was eliminated during further modifications, gave the vehicles a very elegant and streamlined look.
