The DB tried to revive the travel culture that had been pushed into the background with the decline of the TEE connections and the success of the two-class IC trains. The traditional tourist route along the Rhine was retained and the legendary, internationally valued name “Rheingold” was chosen for the train. The DB no longer wanted to build completely new cars, as in 1962. The train's seat cars came from the last series of Avmz 111.2 compartment cars and the last independently developed series of 1st class open-plan cars of the type Apmz 122, both with swivel-sliding doors. The type WRmh 132 was used as the dining car. Ultimately, the WGmh 804 club car, which was converted from an Avmh 121, met the requirements of a luxurious train with a tourist orientation. The external feature of the Rheingold train was the orange dividing strip between red and beige. Normally the train consisted of up to nine cars, including up to four Avm, two Apm, a dining car and a club car.
