The express railcars of the ET 403 series experienced a second heyday when they were leased to Lufthansa, which tried to make its still unprofitable short-haul flights between Düsseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt lucrative. The railcars were in use for Lufthansa until 1993. The excessive costs for the upcoming overhaul ended the operations. The technical design of the ET403 allowed the multiple units to be put together freely and as needed. Two to six-part units could be formed. The multiple units were also driven in double traction. LS Models took all of the changes made for the conversion into the Lufthansa variant into account when implementing them in the model.
