Prototype information

The SNCF 141 R standard steam locomotivesThe 141 R were ordered by France from the United States in 1340 units, divided into two sub-series (141R 1 to 700 and 701 to 1340) with coal or fuel heating, to remedy the serious shortage of locomotives at the end of World War II.
They were delivered in 1323 units from November 1945 (17 machines and their tenders were lost when the freighter carrying them sank) and were highly valued by SNCF mechanics for their robustness and their good operating comfort for the time.
These machines, present in all SNCF regions, provided mixed passenger/freight traffic until 1974. Their discontinuance coincided with the complete disappearance of steam traction in the SNCF's commercial service.
