Prototype information

The X 3800 "Picasso" railcars in 1947. The 251 examples were built in several sub-series by three different manufacturers, namely the Régie Nationale des Usines Renault (RNUR), De Dietrich and the Ateliers de construction du Nord de la France (ANF).
They were mostly arranged in second class, offered 62 seats and could travel in pairs and/or with a trailer. They were equipped with a Renault engine of type 517 G (with a unit output of 300 hp, which was later increased to 340 hp) or type 575 (with a unit output of 360 hp) or a Saurer type BZDS (with a unit output of 320 hp). The latter is manufactured under license by the Société des Forges et Ateliers du Creusot (SFAC).
They are nicknamed "Picasso" because of their eccentric cab, the shape of which did not match the bodywork, reminiscent of Pablo Picasso's face paintings, where the eyes and nose were completely offset1.
The X 3800 "Picasso" series was replaced by the Double Self-propelled Element (EAD) family. At the end of their career, rare examples such as the X 3828 had their roof painted red.
Their reliability, their rusticity, but also their very special link with the driver's seat in the kiosk are assets that have led to their preservation: several examples have been preserved and are operated by tourist railways
