Prototype information

The SNCF ordered 20 RGP trains in 1950. Equipped with the MGO engine, the RGP I were built by the De Dietrich company for the railcars and the Brissonneau & Lotz company for the trailers. They are derived from the RGP 2 2800 for the mechanical part. The single-engine railway sets called RGP I for long-distance traffic had two variants: a series in green and cream livery (X 2720), which was used for domestic trains like the RGP 2; A series in carmine and cream TEE livery (X 2770), comprising only first classes, originally used on Trans Europ Express trains in France and abroad.
Between 1985 and 1991, the two RGP I series were modernised, including the modification of their reinforced front end and Z2 type layouts with modernised driver's cabs; they gradually adopted light grey colours with yellow, blue or red stripes, depending on the TER liveries chosen by the regions.
From 1957, the Brussels route ran from Lyon via Lille or "Le Mont-Cenis" to Turin via Chambéry and Modane. After their withdrawal from the TEE service in 1965, they provided important cross-connections in first class with supplement, such as "le Catalan" from Geneva to Cerbère via Grenoble, Avignon and Montpellier or "Le Rhodanien" from Geneva to Marseille via Grenoble and Avignon.
