Prototype information

After the delivery of the last BB 22200 in 1986, the SNCF is preparing to receive a new series of universal dual-current locomotives that can haul both fast passenger trains at 200 km/h and heavy freight trains.
These machines must therefore have high performance at both 1.5 kV direct current and 25 kV 50 Hz. They must be able to pull a 750-ton passenger train (16 wagons) at 200 km/h on a 2.5 ‰ gradient and a 1,000-ton freight train at 80 km/h on an 8.8 ‰ ramp. The type of motor used is the same as that used on the TGV Atlantique, which was developed at the same time: the synchronous motor. The tests carried out on the BB 20011-20012 prototypes resulted in the delivery of the first five machines (pre-production machines) in 1988. Although their power of 5,600 kW did not reach the power of the CC 6500 with its 5,900 kW, they were much lighter (90 t instead of 116 t).
The 26001 left the factory in early 1988 and was delivered on April 1, 1988. This was followed by the 26002 (May 6), 26003 (May 10), 26004 (July 1) and 26005 (September 1). There will be intensive deliveries for many years, with up to four machines per month.
The last five 26000s were delivered in 1998, the very last example (26234) entering service on 23 July 1998.
In order to remain relatively close to the Alstom Belfort plant, all the locomotives of the series were delivered to the Dijon-Perrigny depot, where the Alstom after-sales service was located, and then distributed to two other depots, Lens and Villeneuve.
The character of a universal machine was implemented very quickly, with the traction of passenger trains at 200 km/h (including the TER 200 of Alsace and the Interloire) and freight trains, particularly between the North-East and the South-East.
Without any significant change in the services offered, a small VFE fleet of twenty Sybics was created in Toulouse in December 2004, which entered service on 5 July 2009 with the Regrouping of the Toulouse Sybics in Villeneuve was dissolved. A group of freight locomotives was moved to Avignon in December 2003 to compensate for the departure of the BB 27000, which were stationed in the north and east, or in the Lens and Thionville depots.
In December 2007, the fourteen locomotives assigned to the TER Alsace were transferred from Dijon-Perrigny to Strasbourg and are now equipped for reversibility.
