Autobahn trains have a long tradition in Germany - in 1956 the German Federal Railways started with the first autobahn train from Hamburg to Chiasso. In 1988, the Deutsche Bundesbahn's car train offering already included 2,929 car trains and 484 express trains with car transport. In 2017, ÖBB took over the car train service from Deutsche Bahn AG and incorporated it into its Nightjet night train division. Four-axle car transport vehicles of the type DDm915, which were purchased in the 1970s, are used. The wagons were initially manufactured at Waggonbau Graff and later at Waggonfabrik Uerdingen. In 1971, the Austrian Federal Railways purchased ten DDm98-80 wagons from the Uerdingen wagon factory, which are very similar to the DB's DDm915. Between 1982 and 1990, eighty further developed DDm98-70 cars were built at the Jenbacher Works. Hobbytrain produces both the DDm915 and the DDm98-70 with all their design differences as detailed models for N scale.
