Cog railways radiate a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountain scenery and bold routes, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The train moves by engaging a gear wheel with a rack in the middle of the track, as the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In the case of rack railways of the so-called mixed system, where friction sections alternate with rack sections depending on the gradient conditions, the traction is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps there are a particularly large number of private rack railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
