The 62 series was developed and delivered by the Henschel company for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in the 1920s. The machines were two-cylinder superheated steam locomotives. A total of 15 units were manufactured. Although the locomotives were built in 1928, the Deutsche Reichsbahn did not accept 62 003–015 until 1932. The reasons for this were the low demand and the high price of the locomotives.
After the Second World War, eight locomotives remained with the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The 62 007 was the only one to receive an EDP number.
