The 86 series was a standard tender locomotive that was built in large numbers by numerous German locomotive factories for the German Reichsbahn. Some of these steam locomotives were found in Austria after the end of the war and were used in passenger and freight transport. One of the most spectacular uses was the pulling of heavy ore trains in front of the 52 series. The machines were based at the Hieflau, Selzthal, Linz, Bischofshofen and St. Veit/Glan heating plants, among others. In 1972, the last locomotives were decommissioned.
