The ETA 150 series battery railcars were very popular with passengers due to their excellent ride comfort and low noise levels. A total of 232 units were built between 1954 and 1965. A further 216 control cars of the ESA 150 type were put into operation. The railcars, which were primarily used on flatland routes, were also often referred to as the "flashlight express", "plug-in InterCity" or "battery flash". They were used in the Augsburg area, Schleswig-Holstein, eastern Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, southern Hesse and the Ruhr region.
