From 1976 to 1995, the ÖBB purchased 217 units of the four-axle thyristor locomotives series 1044. The 5,120 kW locomotives, which can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, shaped the modern image of the ÖBB for many years. From 2002, all 1044s were equipped with push-pull control. This made the vehicles, now known as 1144, even more versatile.
