In 2019, the ÖBB started an upgrade program to renew the double-decker trains (DOSTO). This will optimize around 100 carriages to modern Cityjet level by 2023. The modernization includes on-board WiFi, new seat covers, multi-purpose areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, strollers and luggage, and newly furnished rest areas.
In May 2022, halfway through the ongoing DOSTO upgrade program, the electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in the Cityjet design. With this, the ÖBB is sending an important signal for attractive offers in public transport. The locomotive is not only used for Cityjet trains, but also in regular passenger and freight transport.
