The BB 22200 is a French electric locomotive series for use on both the SNCF's 1.5 kV direct current network and the 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current network. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Between 1976 and 1986, Alstom built a total of 205 locomotives in six series. Due to their multi-system capability and design as a universal locomotive, the BB 22200 is used on almost all standard gauge electrified routes in France for freight and passenger trains.
