In May 1989, 1044.202 was delivered to the ÖBB by SGP-Graz. The electrical part comes from Siemens. It is one of the five locomotives that were painted in the so-called checkerboard design.
The 1044 series is an electric universal locomotive that is suitable for heavy express train and freight train service in flat areas as well as on mountain routes. At the time of its commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and, until the Taurus was purchased, the Austrian Federal Railways' showpiece.
