When the Deutsche Reichsbahn decided in 1980 to electrify all important main routes, there was a need for powerful universal locomotives. Building on the experience with the 250 series, the prototype of the 212 series was created in 1982 as a 140 km/h fast variant of the 243, which went into series production in 1984, with an output of 3,720 kW and a top speed of 120 km/h.
From 1990, 150 locomotives were rented from the German Federal Railway and used as the 143 series mainly in the Freiburg area and in the Ruhr area. After the two German state railways were merged in 1994, the remaining locomotives were also renumbered and have been running throughout Germany ever since.
