The development of electric locomotives had made great technical progress in the mid-1930s. In particular, the new E 18, E 44 and E 93 series provided modern locomotives that were powerful and low-maintenance. The more powerful version of the E 93 was to become one of the most famous locomotives in German electric locomotive history, and the E 94 was born.
The top speed of 90 km/h meant that the locomotive could be used in a much more versatile way and allowed it to be used in express freight and passenger train services in addition to heavy freight train service. In June 1988, the last German "Crocodiles" (now: BR 194) were withdrawn from scheduled service at the DB.
