For the series conversion of some examples of the popular V-160 family, the DB ordered powerful turbines of the type AVCO Lycoming T53-L13 from the then Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz works. From 1970 onwards, These units were used in the locomotives reclassified as Class 210. The locomotives with the operating numbers 210 001–008 were quickly deployed on their intended main routes.
The daily service included the express train "TEE Bavaria" and other heavy express trains between the Bavarian capital Munich and Lindau.
