The decline in traffic at the Deutsche Reichsbahn drove the decommissioning of many locomotives. The class 118, which had been indispensable until recently, was the most affected. In the years before, the increasing electrification at the DR had also led to a decline in the use of the 118. However, some locomotives of the former V 180, renamed class 228 on January 1, 1992, were to be used on the steep stretches in Thuringia in the long term. A few locomotives of the 228.6–8 series were retained by DB AG until 1998.
