In order to remedy the shortage of powerful shunting locomotives, the German Federal Railway purchased the V 60 series locomotives from the mid-1950s. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher friction load of the BR 261. These machines, which can be found in almost all German shunting yards, reached a top speed of 30 km/h, on the line 60 km/h.
On 1 October 1987, the series designation was changed to 360 and 361 respectively and the machines were downgraded to small locomotives. This meant that they could also be driven by small locomotive operators instead of the better-paid train drivers. The locomotives, which were equipped with radio remote control and automatic shunting coupling from 1988, became the BR 364 and 365 respectively.
