In order to remedy the shortage of powerful shunting locomotives, the German Federal Railway purchased locomotives of the V 60 series from the mid-1950s. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher friction load of the BR 261. These machines, which can be found in almost all German shunting yards, reached a top speed of 30 km/h in shunting gear and 60 km/h in mainline gear.
