As one of a total of four double locomotives of the type D 311, this locomotive was put into service by the German Wehrmacht in 1942 as the D 311.04. It was intended for use with the "Schwerer Gustav 2" gun. However, this gun was not completed, so the locomotive was used in the Calais area.
In September 1944, the locomotive ran aground on Dutch territory and was claimed as war booty by the Dutch State Railways. Attempts to get the locomotive ready to drive again failed due to missing parts. After mediation by a Haarlem scrap dealer, the locomotive returned to Germany, where it was put into service in 1950/51 as V 188 002 and was still in operation in the Franconian region until 1972.
