Role model information

Between 1855 and 1892, Swiss private railways, the predecessors of the SBB, also purchased four-axle through cars based on the “American system”. Around 300 of these cars were still available when the Swiss Federal Railway was founded in 1902 and were taken over.
In addition to third-class cars, the SBB took over numerous mixed-class cars, 2nd and 3rd class, as well as baggage cars.

Together with the four-axle passenger carriages, baggage carriages in the corresponding design were also purchased. They were also taken over by the SBB during the nationalization, but disappeared from the operational fleet much faster than the seated cars. However, due to their large loading space, they were ideal as company cars and for stationary use as storage space. In contrast to Germany, a four-axle American-design car was even preserved in Switzerland. The BC4 with the SBB number 4952 was refurbished and can now be viewed in the Lucerne Museum of Transport.
