BRAWA 63114 - N electric locomotive BR 144 DB
Role model information
After the “annexation” of Austria, the E44 should also be used on the Alpine routes of the “Ostmark”. In order to minimize brake pad wear when driving downhill, it was necessary to install an electric resistance brake. The DRB ordered such an additional device for the machines in lots E44 152 - 191 and designated the substructure as E44W for “resistance brake”. Due to the war, only the E44W 152 - 183 were delivered between 1943 and 1951. Externally, the machines were particularly noticeable because of the exhaust chimneys of the brake resistors on the roof. After 1945, the DB only maintained the resistance brake on the 16 Freiburg locomotives used in the Höllental and designated them as E44.11 from 1962 and as BR 145 after 1968. On all others, the E-brake was removed or shut down in the event of damage. The E44 1170 and 1180 have been preserved, it remains to be hoped that one of them will hum past the Hirschsprung again.
