Prototype information

For the transport of moisture-sensitive goods such as lime, the railways had so-called hinged-lid wagons in various designs very early on. The development of this type of wagon in the second half of the 1920s led to the K Elberfeld 80 001 ff., which met the exchange design standard valid at the time and were standardized accordingly. The 8.1 m (without handbrake) and 8.8 m (with handbrake) long wagons had the short wheelbase of 4 m that was common at the time and could be loaded with up to 17.5 t. In order to withstand this weight, the side walls and hinged lids were given striking crossed beads for reinforcement. Although the original paintwork was RAL 8012 with a chassis and offset fittings in RAL 9005, this quickly turned into a light gray haze when lime was loaded. The 991 wagons delivered (up to 1933) were also the last hinged-lid wagons built in series. Although the hinged-lid wagons could be loaded mechanically, they could only be unloaded manually. This meant that the development of wagons for transporting corresponding goods was already in the Reichsbahn era more in the direction of self-unloading wagons and there were no more significant new developments after the K25. Nevertheless, the vehicles classified as K25 by the Federal Railway remained in regular service until the end of the 1960s and were occasionally used as company cars.
