BRAWA 70071 - H0 express train locomotive BR 001 DB, museum locomotive: BEM - Bavarian Railway Museum eV
Prototype information
From 1958 onwards, the German Federal Railways equipped 50 class 01 locomotives with the so-called Type I high-performance boiler. The boiler type, designed according to Friedrich Witte's construction principles, had previously been successfully installed on the BR 01.10 Federal Railway locomotives.
With a value of 1:8.8, the fully welded boiler had a significantly better rating Ratio of radiant to tubular heating surface (old building boiler 1:13.54), which was achieved primarily through the built-in combustion chamber. In figures, this is 54 m² less evaporation area for the high-performance boiler, which was compensated for by an 18 kg/m²h greater heating surface load. This made it possible to achieve the same boiler output with significantly less fuel consumption.
Visually, the locomotives appeared much more modern and tidy thanks to the conversion to the high-performance boiler, and received some adjustments to occupational safety. The cables followed clearer lines. The sandpit from the top of the kettle disappeared. The circulating apron gave way to a wide circulating plate and handlebars were integrated into the smoke deflectors.
Technically, the Knorr surface preheater was replaced by a mixing preheater system of type 57. The locomotives 01 217 and 223 were fitted with roller positions in the drive train on a trial basis. and coupling rods, analogous to BR 01.10. Operationally, the locomotives continued to be used in rosters with old boiler locomotives from traditional railway depots. Only with the discontinuation of steam locomotive maintenance in the Hof depot in 1973 did the use of both 01 variants at the DB end.
