Role model information

The railway has always been a means of transport for large and heavy loads. It therefore made sense that, following various previous designs, the KEPV dedicated itself to the development of rail cars with greater loading capacity from around 1910. In accordance with the needs at the time, a type of rail car was created that was designed for a loading length of 18 m and a loading weight of up to 35 t. Between 1912 and 1928, the KPEV and later the DRG commissioned a total of around 2,650 pieces of the SSlm (Ce 168) rail car designed according to sample sheet Ce 168 in various construction lots. Characteristic of the rail cars of that era were the filigree trusses and the car floor made of perforated sheet metal. While most of the wagons were only equipped with a handbrake when they were delivered, those delivered to the DRB received a Kunze-Knorr freight train compressed air brake ex works. These have been retrofitted to many older cars over the years. The vehicle population has fluctuated over the years. Reputation payments to France and Belgium, as well as Poland, decimated the entire stock after the First World War. At the beginning of the 1950s, both German state railways together still had around 1,000 SSlm 16 / SSlu. Due to further decommissioning, the number of operational cars steadily decreased, so that in the 1970s the last cars of this type were taken out of service.
