After the EKW 49 were converted to the KKd 49, the Deutsche Bundesbahn quickly began to completely redevelop its own dust wagons. The knowledge gained from converting and operating the KKd 49 was immediately incorporated into the new design. The result was the KKds 55 wagon, which was intended for the transport of alumina. The vehicle frame rests on two bogies of type 931 Minden-Dorstfeld. Since the dust containers and their basic structure are included in the load-bearing structure of the trolley, the trolleys do not require any internal long beams. This in turn had the advantage that the container bottoms could be pulled down far above the track.

The four silo containers of the same size had an emptying device with loosening soil in each container. The cargo was transported out of the containers using compressed air.

The small series (only 24 units) commissioned from the Talbot wagon factory were delivered to the DB from 1954 onwards. In addition to transporting alumina, the wagons were also used, among other things, for aluminum oxide. In addition, they were also rented out as private cars to corresponding companies. The small total number was the reason that all cars were phased out by 1998.
