Role model information

The International Railway Association (Union Internationale des chemins de fer, UIC) founded its own research and development institute (ORE) in 1949 and thus laid the foundation for internationally valid construction principles for freight wagons. The European railway administrations soon developed their own vehicles based on the ORE's developed designs and principles for a two-axle standard freight wagon. In accordance with the basic idea of the UIC, these could be used to transport goods and goods within the areas of the member administrations. The Deutsche Bundesbahn started with the first 3,500 cars (according to the preliminary designs) and was able to put the first 2,662 real UIC standard cars into operation in 1957 with the Gmm(e)hs 56. The standardized design was identified externally by the address RIV St UIC. Other railway administrations such as SNCF, FS, ÖBB, NS, DSB, MAV, PKP, CFL, SBB acted in a similar manner and manufactured their own versions of the UIC standard wagons. Due to this fact, the cars are all very similar, but also have country-specific design differences. Since the DB itself had a great need for new wagons and there was also a backlog of modernization of older wagon types, not only UIC St wagons were completely rebuilt. In several conversion programs in which individual parts of older wagons were reused, the wagon types Gmms 44, Gmm(eh)s 60, Gmms 40 and 216 were gradually created. These wagon types were influential for freight transport in Europe from the 1960s to the 1990s With over 100,000 units built, it can be found in almost every freight train.
