BRAWA 49926 - H0 Boxcar Gbs "IFA" DR
Role model information
Freight wagons were and are always needed by the railways. In the 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) was able to provide short-term relief through renovations and modernization, but in the long term it was clear that other solutions would be necessary. The RAW “Unit” Leipzig therefore designed a Glmms car in 1965 that essentially corresponded to the unification features according to the UIC leaflet. The knowledge gained from a test car was incorporated into the series cars produced from 1968, which were now referred to as Glmms 14.05 (later Gbs 1500). The structure, with its distinctive corrugated side walls, was created entirely as a welded construction. The side walls are pulled down to the lower edge of the outer frame rails and the box profiles are welded to it. This made it possible to simplify the side box supports. In order to avoid damage to the sheet metal walls during loading, the inside of the wagons was lined with wood. The floor consisted of standard pine planks and was suitable for loading with forklifts. Based on the Gbs 1500 design, which was built in over 17,00 units, various other variants were subsequently created such as thermal protection wagons, express goods wagons and crew wagons. Since the production capacity of the company's own factories here was reaching its limits, cars were also manufactured in neighboring countries and even in Spain. Due to their suitability for RIV, MC and OPW traffic, the wagons could be used relatively freely beyond the GDR's national borders and were therefore often seen on Federal Railway trains even before the fall of the Wall. Until DB AG was founded, around 7,000 cars were still in use.
