BRAWA 42888 - H0 diesel locomotive BR 212 Wiebe
Role model information
With the adoption of the diesel locomotive type program from 1955, the foundation stone was laid for a success story at the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), some of which continues to this day. It was decided to develop a diesel locomotive for branch line service with an engine output of 1,100 to 1,200 hp, the V 100 series. Based on the slightly older V80, the Munich Federal Railway Central Office expressed specific requests for changes to the MaK company in order to significantly reduce the costs for the new locomotives reduce. The resulting catalog of requirements resulted in a largely finished design by 1957, from which the German Federal Railways ordered six test locomotives. MaK manufactured another locomotive on its own account in order to be able to address customers outside of the DB. In March 1958, the V100 000, the first of a total of 744 locomotives built in the V100 series, left the MaK factory in Kiel. Like no other locomotive series, it embodied the structural change on rail that was inevitably approaching. In the midst of the German economic miracle, the purple locomotives shaped the image of the young, modern German Federal Railway and sent countless old steam locomotives into the blast furnaces. The versatility of all three substructure types ensured that the V100 was widespread throughout Germany and kept many less busy branch lines alive. Around a third of all V100s were equipped with push-pull and multiple traction control ex works in order to save time-consuming relocation in turning stations. At the beginning of the 1970s, individual locomotives began to be equipped with snow plow attachments. It was not until the end of the 1980s that the first large quantities of the V100.10 (211) were decommissioned. With V100.20 (212) this process only started around 10 years later. Quite a few were sold on to other railway companies abroad. Today, with around 50 years of operation, some locomotives are still in service, primarily with private railway companies in Germany, precisely because of their reliability and robustness.
Since the V100 006 was already a 1,350th at the time of the first series order HP engine, all other test locomotives as well as the newly ordered 1,100 HP locomotives were now listed as the V100.10 series to differentiate them. The differences between the V100.10 series and the test locomotives are hardly noticeable at first glance. Instead of the bow-shaped maneuvering handles, simple rods were now used and the lower lamps were designed as double lamps.
