Arnold HN4470 - DR, 2-part double-decker carriage of the DB7 type in bottle green and grey livery "DEUTSCHE REICHSBAHN", Ep. III
Prototype information
After the Second World War, the German Reichsbahn was faced with the challenge of having to quickly handle large traffic flows in the metropolitan areas due to the beginning of the reconstruction of industry. Therefore, from 1952 onwards, new and, for the time, modern double-decker trains were purchased. By 1974, 152 four-car trains from various construction lots - both with and without a control compartment - had been put into service.
In addition, the DR purchased twelve two-car sets in 1955. The trains were used primarily in commuter and suburban traffic in the metropolitan areas, and later in S-Bahn traffic in Rostock, Dresden, Magdeburg and Halle.
Some of the two-car units replaced the well-known Altenberg center-entrance cars on the Dresden-Heidenau-Altenberg route.
They were also able to fulfil the train hauling tasks on the steep stretches in the Thuringian Forest (Themar-Schleusingen-Ilmenau and Schleusingen-Suhl).
Model details
The new Arnold models are available as two-part and four-part units, with or without a control compartment depending on the version. All models come with built-in red tail lights that change with the direction of travel. The headlights on units with a control compartment are of course also illuminated. For use in digital operation, 18-pin digital interfaces in accordance with NEM 662 are available. They are accessible after removing the housing.
For prototypical buffer-to-buffer driving, the double-deck units are also equipped with close coupling guides and close coupling heads on both end cars. The transitions between the cars are also close-coupled.
In order to be able to make the car width true to the original and at the same time make the Arnold models usable in tight radii, the steps under the side entrance doors can be moved sideways. The bogies push the steps outwards when driving through tight curves, and on straights they spring back to their original position.
