Prototype information

The ICE 3 is the name given to various series of ICE high-speed trains. With a maximum permitted speed of 320 to 330 km/h, they are the fastest passenger trains operated by Deutsche Bahn. In regular operation, they reach speeds of up to 300 km/h in Germany and up to 320 km/h in France. A key feature of the ICE 3 is the drive system, which is distributed under the floor throughout the entire train. Four of the eight carriages of an ICE 3 multiple unit, which is around 200 m long, are powered. Compared to locomotive-hauled trains, an ICE 3 therefore has a lower axle load and more seats for the same train length.

ICE 3 multiple units are operated by Deutsche Bahn and Nederlandse Spoorwegen. In 2000 and 2001 and in 2004 and 2005, single-system trains of the 403 series and multi-system trains of the 406 series were delivered for traffic to Belgium and the Netherlands. For traffic to France, multi-system trains were converted to the 406F series (also ICE 3MF). The multi-system trains of the 407 series (Siemens Velaro D), which have been in passenger service since 2013, are referred to as ICE 3 MS. In mid-2020, multiple units of the 408 series were ordered and assigned to the ICE 3 family as ICE 3neo. Internally, all ICE 3 trains are called ICE W. W stands for eddy current brake, a type of brake that is not available in other ICE series trains.
