Prototype information

The BLS Ae 4/4II was purchased between 1964 and 1983 as a universal locomotive with good mountain performance in order to be able to haul trains at higher speeds and to replace the locomotives of the founding years.
Due to the very successful design of the BLS Ae 4/4, the world's first high-performance locomotive without a running axle, the BLS and SLM derived the new development from this series. This is also clearly evident from the box shape: the arrangement of the entrances at the front of the locomotive was taken from the Ae 4/4. The chassis is similar to that of the SBB Re 4/4II. But that is where the similarities to this also very successful series end. The power is transferred to the rails using a differently designed low-pull linkage and cable pull. Instead of sander devices, the locomotive has rail nozzles. In many tests and comparisons with e.g. T. foreign locomotives, the Re 4/4 still proves its enormous performance on hills today. The locomotive can haul a 630-ton train on a 26‰ gradient at 80 km/h. The hourly tractive effort is 226 kN at 77.5 km/h.
The first five machines were only approved for 125 km/h when they were delivered and were accordingly designated Ae 4/4II 261–265. In 1969, after the box support was changed to coil springs and extensive test runs, they were approved for the R series and the maximum speed was increased to 140 km/h. Since then, the locomotives have been designated Re 4/4 161–165.
