Prototype information

The SNCF Class CC 6500 is a type of 1.5 kV DC Electric locomotive. The CC 6500 was, with the CC 40100 and the CC 72000 diesel, the first generation of the family of "broken nose" locomotives and was used for towing trains at speeds of up to 200 km/h (120 mph), but also for heavy goods trains. The trains they hauled during their first years of service included the SNCF's flagship Le Mistral and the Trans Europa Express Aquitain, Capitol and Standard.
The locomotives had 3-axle single-engine bogies, with each set of 3 axles coupled by gears. Speed regulation was provided by rheostats and a series parallel to spade. The engines had double gains, there were therefore four "half-engines", allowing three groups of engines: complete series, parrals series and complete parallel. The power controller had 28 steps.
The second batch of CC 6500 locomotives were fitted with third rail electrical sensors to be used on the high-profile Maurienne line in the Alps, which were removed when the line was converted to aviation fodder.
A total of 74 locomotives were built between 1969 and 1976, with the last in this class being withdrawn from service in 2007. Four more were built as 1.5 kV DC/25 kV AC and as Class CC 21000 locomotives. reconfigured. The use as direct locomotives only between 1995 and 1996, bringing the total number of locomotives CC 6500 to 78.
