The Höllentalbahn (from Freiburg Hbf via Neustadt/Black Forest to Donaueschingen) is not without reason one of the most impressive railway routes in Germany due to its breathtaking route through the narrow Höllental with gradients of up to 57.14% . Today it is rightly registered as a spatially significant cultural monument in the Southern Upper Rhine region. The line was electrified in 1933 with a voltage of 20kV at a frequency of 50Hz. At the same time, the vehicle fleet was renewed with the BR 85 and E 244 locomotives as well as light branch line cars of the Ci-33 and BCi-34 types. It was not until May 1960 that the voltage was changed to the now usual 15kV at 16²/3 Hz. This means that the E 244 were replaced overnight by the E44w from the Freiburg depot. They took over the electric traction on the Höllentalbahn and the transport of the passenger trains typical for this route from various standard branch line cars.
