ESU 50114 - Mobile Control II wireless handheld controller single controller for ECoS, German / English
Technical details
Since smartphones with touch controls have practically completely replaced the classic mobile phone, model railroaders and model railroad manufacturers have been asking themselves how these powerful devices could be used to control a model railroad system. As a result of these questions, many apps have recently been developed that can be downloaded onto a mobile phone and used to control a model railroad.
This concept does have the disadvantage that a smartphone was not primarily designed for model railroading and, due to the lack of input elements, the model railroader's gaze is always drawn to the display. At the latest when the phone's battery dies due to intensive railroading and you can no longer be reached, the limits quickly become apparent.
We at ESU therefore asked ourselves how the advantages of smartphone technology can be combined with the needs of the model railroader.
We are very pleased to present the result of our considerations to you today. With the Mobile Control II you can control locomotives, magnetic items and routes wirelessly via radio!
Open platform
The completely newly developed Mobile Control II is based on Android. A powerful basis has been created for this open, globally used operating system: The ARM® Cortex® A8 microprocessor clocked at 1.3 GHz can access 512 MB RAM and controls a high-resolution 3.2 inch TFT color display. 2 GB of flash memory is available for storing apps and data. A capacitive touchscreen guarantees contactless entry of all data. In addition to a USB port, a WLAN radio interface ensures communication with the outside world. Thanks to the standardized radio interface, trouble-free operation of your model railway system can be guaranteed at all times. With the help of WLAN repeaters, the radio range can be easily extended if necessary.
The permanently installed, powerful lithium polymer battery will easily get you through even the longest days of operation. To charge, simply connect your Mobile Control II to your mobile phone's USB charger or any other USB port.
Due to the open platform, you can expand the range of functions at any time with the help of additional apps from the Google Play Store.
Ergonomics & function combined
When you hold the Mobile Control II in your hands for the first time, you will immediately notice its excellent ergonomics: All controls can be reached immediately with one hand, the most important functions even "blindly": your gaze remains focused on your system and your trains.
This is made possible by the central, motor-controlled rotary control with end stop. With its help, you can sensitively adjust the speed of the locomotive and change the direction of travel.
To switch functions, touch the pictograms shown on the screen directly. The screen is also used to easily change functions - just like you already know from your phone. Finally, two buttons on the left and right side of the device are used to change the direction of travel or to trigger the most important functions.
Interaction
The Mobile Control II is perfectly designed to work with the ECoS digital control centers: The ECoS synchronizes all data with the radio handheld controller so that you do not have to enter any data locally. The names, addresses and correct symbols are of course also displayed for magnetic items and routes.
Controlling locomotives
The Mobile Control II can control all locomotives created in the ECoS and of course understands 14, 28 or 128 speed levels. All essential locomotive properties such as locomotive name, locomotive symbol, function key assignment and function key symbols are adopted by the ECoS and displayed correctly.
Up to 28 function keys can be switched per locomotive, which can of course be individually configured as permanent or momentary functions.
Switching magnetic items
All magnetic items and routes arranged on the ECoS signal box can be switched. Of course, the distinction between two-, three- and four-aspect magnetic items is fully retained and the correct symbol is also shown on the display.
More fun when playing
The high-resolution (480 x 800 pixels, 280 dpi), backlit TFT display of the Mobile Control II always informs you about the most important operating parameters. You can also see whether a locomotive has been occupied by another player or whether an emergency stop has been triggered on the system.
Smart connection
The Mobile Control II uses the WLAN standard to communicate with the ECoS. You therefore have to connect the control center to a WLAN. If you already have a WLAN router (e.g. AVM® FritzBox®), you can easily connect the ECoS to it. The ECoS and the Mobile Control II will find each other automatically.
If you do not want to connect your model railway to your home network or if you want to remain flexible for exhibitions, this is not a problem either: On request, we can supply a mini access point for the Mobile Control II, which can be set up very easily in just a few steps using the ECoS.
If your model railway grows, you can operate up to 16 Mobile Control IIs with your ECoS. In this way, for example, each club member can control exactly the locomotives assigned to him.
