Prototype information

The first steam locomotives of the later series 58.10-40 were built in 1917 as Prussian G 12s in the Henschel works. By 1924, almost 1,500 examples had been built by various locomotive factories for the Prussian, Baden, Württemberg and Saxon railways. The locomotives, which had around 1,550 hp, formed the backbone of heavy freight transport until the mid-1930s. After the Second World War, steam locomotives of the series 58 were found in both German states.
The German Federal Railway was able to do without these locomotives quite quickly and they were decommissioned by the end of the 1950s. The German Reichsbahn, on the other hand, was dependent on them for a long time. Some examples were given a makeover in the 1960s, but they were still in use in their original form until the mid-1970s. The Aue/Sachs depot in particular became well-known. through the last deployments of the 58 series in 1976.
