Prototype information

For shunting work in wagon workshops and container facilities, for moving locomotives without their own power or for moving electric locomotives without overhead lines in railway depots, the Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnischen Werke (LEW) in Hennigsdorf delivered the first series of a battery-powered towing vehicle based on the proven EL8 mine locomotive to the Deutsche Reichsbahn from 1966. Due to the low acquisition costs, low maintenance requirements and emission-free operation, the small shunters could and can be used universally and have proven themselves and continue to do so well. By 1990, 506 vehicles had been built.

After the ASF was initially standard equipment in all railway depots and repair shops of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and in many industrial companies in East Germany, the small shunter can also be found in its large factories throughout Germany after the founding of Deutsche Bahn AG. The ASF can now even be found in ICE maintenance workshops, including in classic ICE livery. With the closure of DB workshops or industrial plants, many found new use in other workshops, at private railways or railway associations; only a few ASF have been scrapped so far.
