Prototype information

The Frecciarossa 1000, commercial name of the ETR 1000 (Elettrotreno Rapido) in the FS classification, is the most modern high-speed train in the Trenitalia fleet.
It was developed as a joint venture between the Italian railway manufacturer Ansaldo Breda (now Hitachi Rail Italy) and the multinational conglomerate Bombardier Transportation. The design of the vehicle, officially named Zefiro 300, was submitted by the joint venture as part of the Ferrovie dello Stato's tender for 50 new high-speed trains. The original specifications called for a train that complied with European technical standards for high-speed trains, with a commercial design speed of 360 km/h, initially operated at 300 km/h and tested at 400 km/h.
Other requirements included the train's suitability for a condition-based, predictive maintenance program and the possibility of operating in eight different European countries, namely the railway systems of Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
Commercial operation of the new train began in June 2015, on the occasion of Expo 2015.
The introduction of the ETR 1000 will enable Trenitalia to use its existing ETR 500 high-speed trains on other routes, such as between Milan and Venice and on the Adriatic coast.
