The Ae 4/4 series is a powerful axleless bogie locomotive on the Bern–Lötschberg–Simplon Railway (BLS). Eight copies were purchased in 1944/1945 as a result of the constantly growing freight traffic on the Lötschberg route. The specifications at the time called for, among other things, a trailer load of 400 t for a 27‰ gradient at a speed of 75 km/h. The four Ae 4/4 253 to 256 were later converted into the two Ae 8/8 274 and 275.
