The 218 series has shaped the image of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Bahn like no other diesel locomotive type over the last five decades. From 1971, 398 series locomotives were put into service and used for both passenger and freight trains. They reached a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW.
The 218 series has gone through a number of color variations over time. The first 218s were delivered in the purple color that was common for diesel locomotives at the time.
