Role model information

Similar to the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the west, the Deutsche Reichsbahn in eastern Germany was constantly improving its vehicle fleet and making it more economical. At the beginning of the 1950s, a large number of class 44 locomotives were converted from grate to pulverized coal firing, which enabled up to 10% greater boiler output. Even greater performance was only possible with oil firing. The first attempts at this were carried out on the Reichsbahn on 44 195. After being converted to oil firing, the locomotive was taken to the research institute in Halle and tested extensively in operation.

Confirmed by the good test results, the Reichsbahn commissioned the conversion of a further 96 locomotives to main oil firing at the RAW Meiningen, which happened between 1963 and 1967.
The 2'2' T34 oil tenders got the distinctive, angular 13.5 m³ heavy oil tank and a closed rear wall to the driver's cab. The latter improved the working conditions in the driver's cabs, especially when reversing. Since the oil containers on the DR were only filled from above, there was no external riser for bunkering the fuel.

The new furnace made the 44 oil on the DR almost irreplaceable. Of the 102 BR 44 locomotives that were still in operational condition in 1974, 94 were oil-fired and were mainly distributed among the Eberswalde, Nordhausen, Saalfeld, Sangerhausen and Wittenberge depots. It was only the second oil crisis at the end of 1981 that led to the rather sudden retirement of the 44 series.
