The Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) proceeded in purchasing standard freight locomotives in a similar way to comparing the 01 and 02 series. The requirement for the new locomotive was to be able to transport freight trains weighing up to 1,200 tons over low mountain routes with an axle pressure of 20 tons. The maximum speed for the pre-series locomotives was set at 70 km/h. In order to determine the more economical design, various locomotive manufacturers were commissioned in 1926 to build 10 locomotives each of the series 43 (two-cylinder engine) and series 44 three-cylinder engine). In addition to assigning the locomotives to other railway depots, a direct comparison was made between the 43 and 44 at the Pressig-Rothenkirchen depot. The advantages and disadvantages of each series were tested in train transport on the Frankenwaldbahn. The comparison of the two series was initially to the disadvantage of the more powerful 44 series. The economic efficiency of the two-cylinder locomotive 43 prevailed at that time. However, in the mid-1930s, after the global economic crisis had been overcome, the call for more powerful freight locomotives became louder. People remembered the experiences they had had with the 44 series ten years earlier. With the experience gained in steam engine construction since 1925, an intermediate series was created with the 44 013-065 locomotives. In 1938 (from 44 066) proper series production finally began. By 1949, a total of 1,989 class 44 locomotives had been manufactured at various locomotive factories at home and abroad. The locomotives met expectations and from then on were a backbone in freight train transport.
