In order to make the capital Berlin easily accessible from larger cities on a daily basis, the DR introduced rapid urban transport at the end of 1960. These connections, designed as through trains, had fewer stops than normal express trains and therefore had shorter travel times. In the morning you could travel comfortably with the city express train, originally known as the D 150 and from 1975 known as the D 1050, from Meiningen via Suhl, Erfurt, Weimar, Halle, Berlin-Schönefeld Airport to Berlin-Schöneweide. In the evening there was the opportunity to return to Meiningen with the return train D 1057. The locomotive was changed from V to E traction in both directions in Erfurt. With the timetable change in May 1989, the name rapid urban transport was no longer used and the last remaining connections were included in the DR's normal offering.
