Role model information

For the transport of moisture-sensitive goods such as lime, the railways very early on had so-called folding lid wagons in various designs. The development of this type of wagon in the second half of the 1920s led to the K Elberfeld 80 001 ff., which met the exchange design standard that was valid at the time and was standardized accordingly. The 8.1 m (without handbrake) and 8.8 m (with handbrake) long cars had the short wheelbase of 4 m that was common for that time and could be loaded with up to 17.5 t. In order to withstand this weight, the side walls and hinged lids were given conspicuous crossed beads for reinforcement. The original paint was in RAL 8012 with the chassis and contrasting fittings in RAL 9005, but this quickly turned into a light gray veil of color when lime was added. The 991 cars delivered (until 1933) were also the last series-built hinged top cars. Although the folding top wagons could be loaded mechanically, they could only be unloaded by hand. This circumstance meant that the development of wagons for transporting the corresponding goods was already being pursued more in the direction of self-unloading wagons during the Reichsbahn era and there were no significant new developments after the K25. Nevertheless, the vehicles classified as K25s by the Federal Railway remained in regular traffic until the end of the 1960s and occasionally as company cars.
